the annual festival that is celebrated in the Madre De Teus Church
which is popularly known as the Vettukadu Church.
The Madre De Teus Church or the Vettukadu Church is located at a distance
of about 7 km from the capital of the state Thiruvananthapuram. The
place gains a fresh lease of life when the Vettukadu Perunal Festival
is celebrated. Stretching for a period of ten days, the festival is
an occasion for the people to get involved in unrestrained mirth.
Description of the Vettukadu Perunal Festival in Kerala
When the festival of Vettukadu Perunal is celebrated, many ceremonies
are observed in the church. The performance of these religious rites
is an integral part of the festival.
The festival comes to an end in the last Saturday of the Christian
year. The highlight of the festival can be said to be the procession
that is taken out on the preceding Saturday. In this magnificent procession,
the image of Lord Christ is taken out. A large number of people join
the procession and an even greater number is present there as spectators.
On Sunday, the Vettukadu Perunal Festival finally draws to a close.
A dignified and somber mass is held on that day in which many devoted
Christians participate. This is followed by the Eucharistic procession.
People are also seen in the act of praying ceremonially invoking divine
protection. Sermons are also held to enlighten the people on the path
of righteousness.
To conclude we may say that the Madre De Teus Church or what is more
famously known as Vettukadu Church bustles with activity when this
festival is celebrated. The surrounding is full of joyous exuberance.
